
LYMEC held an Executive Committee and seminar on transatlantic relations in Rome last week (30 Nov-5 Dec 2004), which were organized in co-operation with Gioventù Liberale (FdGLI) and Radicali Italiani. Both events was attended at total for more than 70 participants, including representation from the Young Democrats of America, IFLRY and ISEEL.
The seminar gathered 35 participants from all over Europe and US to discuss and share opinions about the transatlantic relations between the EU and the USA after the recent dramatic global events, such as terrorism and economical crisis that have shown some European weakness. Among the seminar speakers were Secretary General of Italian Radical Party Daniele Capezzone, Carlo Scognamiglio and Carlo Jean.
LYMEC Executive Committee was attended by more than 60 delegates. In the opening of the EC, former MEP from the Italian Radicals, Marco Cappato, hold an inspiring speech. The EC participants had a chance to discuss about many issues, such as manifesto and Program of Action. It also adopted the following resolutions: “Open negotiations with Turkey without delay!”, “The Political Situation in the Russian Federation”, “Resolution for supporting democracy in Cuba”, “English as single primary working language in the institutions of the European Union” and two internal motions “Capping the debts of inactive Member Organisations” and “Reduced Participation Fees to LYMEC statutory events for Member Organisations having financial difficulties”.
Both events were also attended by two high-profile representatives from the United States of America, Jay Augustine and Rachel Morse. Also representatives from the International Federation of Liberal Youth (IFLRY) and Initiative of South Eastern European Liberals (ISEEL) were present at the LYMEC EC.
