This week the LYMEC Bureau met in Brussels with representatives of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE), the liberal group in the European Parliament.
Apart from meeting several other ALDE key contacts, discussing collaboration, the leadership of LYMEC met with Annemie Neyts-Uyttebroeck MEP, President of the European Liberal Democrat and Reform Party (ELDR). The talks focused on the creation of the External Action Service of the European Union and the involvement of Parliament in setting it up.
The LYMEC Bureau also met with Sharon Bowles MEP. The Chairwoman of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs and LYMEC exchanged views on a number of topics, including the shocking state of public finances of member states, the reliability of statistics and how to reduce deficits.
Privacy and the outrageous SWIFT deal by the Council were the topics of intensive talks between the LYMEC Bureau and Alexander Alvaro MEP, Sofie In't Veld MEP and Marietje Schaake MEP. Following up on these consultations, LYMEC plans a big awareness raising campaign in the coming days to convince the majority of the European Parliament to stop the handover of European banking data to the US without any kind of judicial oversight.
In addition to these talks, the LYMEC Bureau also held its regular Bureau meeting, where it prepared the upcoming LYMEC seminar in Poznan (Poland) 'Education as a location factor' from 7-11 April as well as the LYMEC seminar, Executive Committee and Congress in Sinaia (Romania) from 27 April - 2 May 2010.
